MEET A MAGNIFICENT WOMAN SERIES
by Nani Aki Linder
This story has sensitive and important information to convey. I recommend you get a cup of tea and read this when you have the time to absorb the many insights and messages being shared with the sole purpose of helping other women who may have found themselves in similar circumstances. I deeply honor Lynn Phelps the woman and hope you will take time after reading to e-mail us your thoughts.
Meet my friend Lynn Phelps Founder & Executive Director of NWAHMA
Lifting The Veil Of Silence
Woman who stand up and share their pain with others are to be applauded. Lynn Phelps is such a woman. She has my profound respect. As a professional speaker am constantly listening, ever vigilant and aware of thousands of untold heroic woman who live amongst us quietly, valiantly reaching out to help others. As I got to know Lynn through telephone conversation and many e-mails trust between us grew and she began to share freely her own story of HOPE.
As she shared and filled in the blanks of time, I began to encourage Lynn to speak out publicly and share her story personally. I am so honored that she lifted the veil of silence and allowed this humble lowly pencil to write her story. Lynn says, " I would love to deliver my life but have been afraid to actually do it but I know I can help so many women!" As we exchanged information I found her forthrightness refreshing and sometimes startling. She is candid as she told me, " I have survived incredible trials in my life. I am a rape survivor!"
As a young child Lynn was abused. She says," I watched my alcoholic father go from an upstanding citizen to becoming a skid row bum. I knew when he was beaten and killed. I watched my dad beat my mother. Every day on the way to school I had to walk past him as he laid there on the street drunk but I didn't care he was my father. And I loved him anyway!" He would sneak and hug Lynn and she remembers not even noticing the smell because she just loved him anyway. Are you hearing the cry of the child and the love of a little girl child for her father no matter what?
Take a deep breath now. Go get another cup of tea because this next part is alot harder to read yet it has incredible eloquence in the sharing.
Lynn is a survivor of a "forced abortion". "They held me down", she says and she endured her baby being taken from her. For her own good, of course. Lynn is one of many young woman who face choices of what to do when becoming pregnant at a young age. Few however, are forced into this decision with the child aborted against ones will. I admire her quiet re-telling of this trauma. And I can only imagine the years of pain to overcome; stand up again; and dedicate ones life to uplifting the lives of women and children, indeed families from all walks of life.
God doesn't give us more than we can handle yet listening to Lynn's life time of sorrow made me pause and wonder why? It is a human question to ask, and am sure she did ponder; God why me? Many women would have just given up. Some would have chosen anger or bitterness as their mode of coping. Not Lynn! This courageous woman was to experience more pain including a marriage gone bad. Because of it she and her two young children became homeless. Know what? Lynn pulled up her pantyhose and asked for no help. Instead she set out and worked hard to get herself and her children off the streets and into a new life. Was it easy? No ! Lynn has battle scares and wounds that sometimes resurface but she perseveres anyway. She lives in the present with eyes set to the future. I honor her courage. Today she is happily married to a wonderful supporting man and is thankful for the miracle birth of her now teenager daughter and is also a devoted grandmother.
Lynn Phelps is by birth a half Cherokee Indian Woman who has experienced discrimination and heart ache. She believes as I do, it is the character of a person not the color of their skin that matters. Through all of her many impossible crucibles, Lynn prayed and believes reverently that she is blessed with the gift of faith. I asked Lynn, "what is your proudest achievement? " Her inspiring answer in a loving spirit of helping others stand up is, "I am above all, a 20 year recovered alcoholic."
Ah my dear friend Lynn, people will listen, there are so many who need your comfort. My guess is there are tears flowing from eyes reading now of your courage and absolute faith. The tenacity that makes you get up no matter how many time life's sorrows seeks to break your spirit, is indeed, admirable to say the least. You got up again, and again and again. You did whatever it took to make a better life for yourself and your children. No excuses. No whining. No seeking help or blaming others or circumstances. You infused your own spirit of Hope and a courage that is rare and founded a family first organization to help others.
Ladies and gentleman Lynn Phelps is the founder and president of NWAHMA and it would be wonderful if you would go to her website and join the organization and do all you can to support a woman who spends her life supporting families first through NWAHMA. She is indeed a woman that has earned this writers admiration and support and I pray yours as well. Go now to www.nwahma.com and join, give it a test drive. I joined and I invite you to consider it too. While visiting her site, subscribe to her free virtual woman's magazine Woman to Woman.

Thank you Lynn for allowing me the privilege to lift the veil of silence and share a tiny glimpse of your courage to thousands of women and men. I honor you Lynn for authorizing the printing of this important story of triumph in the seemingly impossible odds. FYI, NWAHMA means National Work At Home Mom's Association which is a families first organization. Its Founder and CEO is ready to listen and assist. I have the high honor to be a member of Lynn's Executive Advisory Board. Tell Lynn Nani sent you. www.nwahma.com

MASTERING THE ART OF LIVING DIVERSITY SERIES
By Nani Aki Linder

Lynn's story amplifies this bit of sage wisdom from our sacred ancestors. How do we get past ourselves and seek the future? How do we stick to our noble intent because dear hearts, all wisdom, all knowledge, all noble deeds come from and are perceived in good or evil by its "intent". Realize however to cancel evil one smothers it with good. Here we go!
"See and make your future bigger than your past."
Point: No one can grow by living in the past. Our past is useful in that it gives us valuable experience as long as you have found the positive in the negative experiences. DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO GET STUCK HERE. Why? It is limiting. There is no future here.
Deeper thinking: Project the wisdom and learning of your past as a foundation for a better future. Why? This assures a future.
Seeing beyond the obvious:
I see the past often as a training ground which assists in either personal growth, being able to assist someone else and as stepping stones to greater good. At times this has meant "humility training" ka ha'aha'a, "Spiritual training, Ko ho 'omana, living and walking with Ke Kupono "Integrity", striving with Ka Hanohano "dignity", cherishing the wisdom of Ke alaka'i "leadership", sharing the "joyous breath of life", ke aloha and keeping faith and true to myself by practicing the 4th R, "responsibility". To slay dragons of fear we must turn and face them head on.
We are often hardest on ourselves and cannot see beyond the obvious because we are stuck in the hurts of the past. This ancient Hawaiian saying honors the whole person with its simplicity. It is man who makes things difficult by dwelling on things they cannot change. Thoughts have power spoken or unspoken. Therefore choose wisely!
"He olina leo ka ke aloha; "praise loudly, criticize softly".

"I give myself permission to take 30 minutes to be upset, rant and rave then re-center and move on. Longer than that wastes precious time and time is the future. Survive or THRIVE, pick one!"
~ Nani Aki Linder
FAQ:
1. Is Changing Winds and University Of Life & Hope the same?
Aole! No! Changing Winds is a new forming 501c3 founded by Christine Rose of STAR. This corporation is on the East Coast. University Of Life & Hope Institute is Nani Aki Linder's Multicultural Leadership Educational & Diversity Systems. I am an Author and Professional Speaker in the area of Diversity and Effective Multi-cultural communication skills. My definite purpose in life is to uplift the lives of all Native Americans.
2. Who are Native Americans? Great question! Congress came up with this term to identify aboriginal peoples or the "original peoples" of the America's and Hawaii. I am Hawaiian by birth, congress refers to Hawaiians as one of the group of Native American's. On this continent the Indian Nations are Native American. Included now are Guamanians (Chamorro) and Samoan peoples from Samoa.
3. So what do we call you? Human beings first and foremost. I am Hawaiian. Most Native American Indians that I know prefer to be called Indian and their tribal connection, example Sioux, Assiniboine, Cheyenne etc.
4. But what is your title? I personally am not into titles, it is my belief that those who "lead by running as the wolves" need no title. People recognize who you are or are not. Your resume only serves to get you in the door it is your skill, your values, your integrity and keeping your word that keeps you there or tosses you out on your ears. You may find that most Native American's as part of their heritage honor humility, listening in the silence and natures language.

Point to Ponder:
"Knowledge is based on fact. Wisdom is a learned skill that enhances and promotes "action" using your knowledge; yet nothing works my friends, until you do!"
Nani Aki Linder
Action Exercise For July 2005:
Breathing is something we all do
daily but few of us do it correctly There is a wonderful yoga
exercise I would like to share with you.
Ready? Read this clear
through then practice. If you are an athlete this is
great for building stamina. Place your tongue on the roof of
your mouth. Now slide the tongue forward till it touches
the very tip of your teeth and roof of your mouth. relax your
lips so your mouth is ever so slightly open. Next sit up
straight, feet planted firmly on the ground, shoulders back.
Take a deep breath from your lower belly. Hold it for
the count of 15 (tongue is as I instructed). Now expel
your breath through your nose by humming slowly to the count
of 15. Do this everyday at least five times working your
way to 15 repetitions. When you get really good at it
your breath release humming shall be at 32 counts then 42 or
52. It takes practice. Your body should feel
the vibrations, your cells and circulation is affected in a
positive way and the river of life flows gently through your
inner highway. I would be most interested in hearing
from you how this vibrating hum to release breath through the
nose affects you and your hands. Be bold! Be
Brilliant! Stand and
become!

Continuing with our Tip Sheet series we
add five summer tidbits of hope which we invite you
to reflect on, take what you need and discard the
rest. This is not intended as medical advise but for
informational purposes.
Tip Series
Summer & Ways To Protect You
and
Your Family From Sunburn.
Vitamin D is a necessary and often
neglected nutrient. The Sun is your best source.
The following are some guides you may find helpful. If
you are at the beach remember you get a double whammy from the
suns reflection off the water and the sand. Drink lots
of water to stay hydrated. If you are on anti-biotic
stay out of the sun. If your tummy is growling it is not
hunger your body seeks it is water. Watch the
dehydration.
-
Dress in protective clothing such as a hat,
long-sleeve shirt and long pants, but don't forget it is
possible to get sun burnt through clothes as they have only
an SPF of 5.9.
-
During the summer, limit exposure when the sun is
most potent -- from 11 AM to 1 PM. For your children, reduce
exposure to the sun particularly during the hours of 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m.
-
At the beginning of the season limit your
exposure to the sun. Progressively increase the time in the
sun so that in a few weeks, you will be able to have normal
sun exposure with less risk of skin cancer.
-
Make sure you have adequate eye protection such
as sunglasses with both UVA and UVB protection from
radiation.
-
Because there will be times when you can't avoid
excessive exposure to the sun, carry and use a safe,
non-toxic sunscreen -- You may consider getting
sunblock from your health food department. If
its for kids, Green Tea Sunblock SPF 25 is considered
safe. Read ingredients. Disclaimer: This is for informational purposes and not
intended as medical advice. Take what you need and
discard the rest.

Ours not to reason why
is a cliché's often spoken but seldom reflected on. Know
what? Feelings just are, you are entitled to them.
It is neither good nor bad. It just is. Life would
be simpler if we made a commitment to do the best that we can
everyday. To make no judgments, make no comparisons and
everyday before we go to bed to hit the delete button on
things that don't pass the" I am worthy of everything life has
to offer" test. Words have meaning, choose them
wisely.
