Aloha
e everyone and welcome to May 2004 of Kaleo O Nani
Newsletter!
I
hope all mothers reading this had a very special
day, now we plan for Father's Day.There is an oriental saying that
goes something like this; "a home without a mother
lacks foundation without a father there is no roof."Children
and Ohana (family) need for foundation and roof.Celebrating
life and living as a family is an important piece in
the life of a child. When we cherish our
spouses we assure the unity of a child's living balanced
and feeling security, Food for thought, as
always take what you need from this newsletter and
discard the rest.
Enjoy,

Comments
from readers:
Hello
Nani, I love the appearance of this
months newsletter. It looks great. You are unbelievably talented
- I am so glad you are in my circle of life. As more and
more people come forward to share their personal stories
about what they have encountered we will learn more and more
of what it takes to reach "Harmony". I look forward
to reading each months words and contemplating the thoughts. There
is something in everything everyone writes that takes us
closer and closer. It is good to have the feeling of being
a part of something good. Iris
Aloha,
my friend! Long
time no see, but I think of you often. Excellent newsletter
again today!
So,
Nani, what can a regular person like me do to help some
of these children? It's
mind-boggling to me that
these things are still going
on. Do you have some literature or something
you could send me, perhaps teach me a bit about their
particular culture? What
are their needs (that someone like me could look into,
put the word out, try to help?) Sadly,
I'm not a teacher, but I am willing to brainstorm to
see how I could help...
I
also want to share an
article with you --because you were the inspiration
behind it. Remember not too long ago you mentioned
*Integrity* in one of your newsletters? About
doing the right thing -- even when no one's looking... Well,
I couldn't get it off my mind, and finally an article
was born, You're welcome to use it as you see fit,
if you choose to. Sending blessings and kindness
your way,
Christine Rose did a great job of "seeing through the
eyes and walking in the steps"...Isn't it uplifting to
know that insight into the dilemma of racism is alive and
well and within reach of all who will open heart, mind,
spirit, and then ACT positively upon that insight to make
life better for all people!
Maika'i, Christine! Leilani in Colorado.

Did
you know?
Garlic- often
referred to as a "miracle food" more than lives up to
that description. There's not much this herb can't
do. Can you think of any other food that is proven
to fight infection, thin the blood, alleviate high blood
pressure, lower cholesterol, stimulate the immune system,
treat lung infections and some studies indicate improve
or prevent cancer? Garlic historically was
in use in Egyptian papyrus of medicinal preparations
dating from 1500 B.C. and lists 22 garlic preparations
for ailments such as headache, weakness and sore throat. There
are records this was recorded in Greece, Roman soldiers
took it for strength and endurance and ancient oriental
healers recommended garlic as a way to reduce high blood
pressure. In India Shamans suggested garlic as
a successful treatment for heart disease. Garlic
which contains "Alicia is even stronger than the two
most popular prescription antibiotics - penicillin and
tetracycline. A study in Jean Carpers "The Food
Pharmacy" reported 72 separate infections were treatable
with garlic. Interesting food for thought!

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY:
Did
you know that one half of the CEO's of Fortune 500 companies
had a "C" or "C-" average in college? Sixty five
percent of all U.S. Senators come from the "bottom
half of their class", 75% of Presidents of the United
States were in the "lower half club" in school and
over 505 of millionaires and entrepreneurs never finished
college. Hum! Still think you can't do it? (read
Robert J. Kriegel's book, If it ain't Broke don't Fix
It (warner books 1991)
Point to Ponder: Many
believe that official credentials are the keys to success
and you will never hear me argue that credentials aren't
useful. Wise entrepreneurs realize
while credentials might get you in the door, it is your
knowledge, action plan, perseverance, integrity, tenacity diligence
and MARKETING skills that keeps you there or tosses
you out on your ears. Review your goals, skills,
both strengths and weakness. Write them down, thinking
is not the same as "seeing the written word." Why
is this step important? It reviews your thoughts,
helps you to discard those you didn't mean and validates
what you know and shows you what you don't know. When
you are finished proceed to Let's try this
paragraph.
Let's Try This:Simple
task to check your "what makes me unique" marketing
tools. Look at your advertising blirp, one sheet,
business card. Next check your competitors either from
their one sheet or the yellow pages. Be
very alert to what is the same and what is different. Circle
the words they use that you use to describe your
services. What's left? If your ad or one sheet
is the same as there's, I the consumer will call
for your services or theirs by random dialing. If
however, you empower me with your UNIQUE SERVICE by a
single glance, my fingers will dial your number every
time. For example, my dentist in Montana's card
and ad in the yellow pages says, "I cater to cowards." His
logo is a simple bite. Get
the "picture". In that short sentence he tells
me he will be gentle, you can trust me!
Point of Action: What
will you do to unleash the power within? Thought
is energy and begins twice, first in the mind second
when you take action. Review your advertising or
10 second commercial promoting your UNIQUENESS! Most
people are wasting advertising money. To be the
same as your competitor keeps you both in the
95% that do not excel. This
is one time when being different, standing out, counts
towards your success. Let me know how this
exercise went for you. nani@universityoflife.info I
am available for consultation.

Spirit
of Hope Recognition for April
For
American soldiers who fight the tiger everyday to keep
us free. Pause
and reflect for a moment on the sacrifice of each soldier
from every branch of the service, every walk of life, every
heritage of our land. Awesome vision isn't it! Our
diverse group of warriors defend our freedom so we might
go about our daily lives to work, play, build, criticize,
run for office, protest, build a business, sit and do nothing
if we wish, enjoy a night out, run and play with our children,
take in a movie, go to a concert, visit a casino, tell
jokes about them or the president of us all, have a coke
or a beer if you want, hold the hand of your special person,
comfort your child or grandchild, the list is endless and
the price of our collective freedom is high, always has
been. Proof of that are the endless rows of graves of our
brave American warriors in our country and overseas. Do
we really take time to appreciate their sacrifice or do
we find ourselves too busy complaining of the price of
gasoline, the heat or focusing on what we do not have rather
than giving thanks for what we do have and the price being
paid as I write this by someone's son or daughter, father,
mother, spouse or sweetheart, so we might have and keep
it?
Where
do we get such brave young men? How do we honor their service?
How do we show their families that we care? How do we support
them now in harms way as I write? In an election year can
we see beyond the rhetoric and focus on them? Can
we help in anyway to keep them safe? These are questions
that each of us can answer or not because of the freedom
we enjoy due to their sacrifices.
Thank
you to those who serve and have served. We are often ungrateful
and insensitive. Yet we love and cherish you and your service
to this nation. We find these brave warriors amongst us,
that's where! They project the kindness and decency of
Americans who when united shout out, "when you hurt one
of us, you have the entire nation to deal with."
What can
you do? Next time you see a member of our military,
stop and say thanks for staying alert day and night so
I don't have too.
What a
country! Warts and all we are a free nation thanks
to the men who wear our uniform and their commander in
chief who takes the slams from everywhere in the world,
listens to the ranting of ill informed, ungrateful countries,
media outlets and some in our own land who want the goodies
of life without a clue of the price it cost to enjoy freedom.
Remember all who serve in your prayers. This humble writer
can think of no adequate words except Thank You, each and
everyone. Well done thou good and faithful servants. "Greater
love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for
his friends",
I am truly humbled beyond words by your courage and love
for your country and recognize you with the Spirit of Hope
Little Brown Penny Recognition for April 2004. If
you are the loved one of a serviceman or woman Mahalo for
your sacrifice as well.

MASTERING THE ART OF LIVING
By Nani Aki Linder
Successful
living always depends on intent and purity of thought to
do no harm as you go about your life's journey. All things
begin with choices and then work. Nothing is automatic.
Seeing your life as half full or half empty is a choice.
One is on survive mode, the other thrive. Pick one!

Hawaii
Land of Aloha, land of my birth and the sacred teachings
of our people. Many people do not know that Hawaii is
a kingdom that was taken by force, our queen imprisoned
and at one point sentenced to death. We have the only Palace
in the United
States called IolaniPalace.
Former President Clinton signed an apology bill to our
people in 1993 and as I write this, our people "the Hawaiians" continue
to struggle for their own homeland. There are many
debates; one is the Akaka bill now pending on the floor
of the U.S. Senate, another is the claim of the people
for autonomy in the United Nations, meanwhile out people
wait while they do studies and studies of studies.
Clearly
a decision has to be made for the welfare of the people
and justice which leaves no one behind, including those
who now share the wealth of our islands. Our islands are
needed by the military as a harbor for the safety of the United
States and
all Americans and our people require adequate housing,
education and work opportunities. There is a myth, actually
a stereotype that Hawaiians are "all lazy." Such
rot! For shame on those who circulate or consent
with their silence by circulating this nonsense. In every
society we have our share of professionals, teachers, doctors,
lawyers, politicians and yes we also have jerks. That
does not mean that every race should be tarred with the
brush of "lazy bums!" Calm, reasoned, non-militant negotiations
present the best possibilities for resolution not just
for us but with every serious problem situation.
Everyday
we delay our Kupuna (elders) do without.Everyday we delay,
another Kupuna dies waiting for the basics they are entitled
to. FYI, our queen was educated and a prolific writer. Our
Kamehameha Schools produce some of the finest scholars
and professionals who are second to none. The monies
to education our children at Kamehameha are not
at tax payer expense but paid for by the money set aside
by the crown lands of our royal family. We are an
inclusive people who extend our aloha (joyous breath of
life) to all people. Our work ethic is high, heritage proud
and strong, unity and loyalty a given. We are Hawaiian
Kanaka Maoli Wa Apana canoe paddlers. No one asked
us if we wanted to be categorized as Native American's,
I doubt anyone asked the Indian Nations either.
Why
do I write of this? For clarification and education,
many people do not know. If we don't speak up who
will and how will you know! Now you have a
small glimpse, feel free to ask questions, go on the
internet and check it out.
My library of Hawaii's
history is here and many libraries have information. Did
you know we are being registered as I write? In the United
States we
register dogs and some cats, American Indian people and
Hawaiian's. I am registered, I carry my ID and
so do Indians. Tell me, do you have an ID
that identifies you by your nationality? Since
my ancestors were standing on the shores to greet yours
and Indians were her to greet Lewis and Clark, why are
we the ones registered? Interesting food for thought
isn't it? We all have drivers license and social
security two nationalities have "ethnic identification
cards. These
are offered as facts and food for thought nothing
more.
Please
send me your comments and or criticisms.I
print responses, positive or negative. Why?
I respect your right to agree or disagree. When our team
of U of Life and Hope trainers comes, our focus is you
and we leave our egos at the door.In my opinion it is the
only way to problem solve and educate.Email me nani@universityoflife.info

Thoughtful Comment from a reader to Christine's
two riveting articles on racism on reservations:
Dear Nani,
Thank you, once again,
for a riveting April Newsletter. The two part series written
by Christine Rose is profound. It is also true
- every single word of it. As I finished reading
her words, I tried to imagine myself as a non-Indian
woman reading about the battles Indian Children in America are
facing on a daily basis in today's schools.
It was hard for me to
read the words and take responsibility for being part of the
silent majority who worships money and belongings and ignore
the abuse of children because they are not like the
majority.
Yet, that is what each
of us must do. Place ourselves in the role of an Indian child
who is sent to war (in schools across America) without the tools
to defend themselves.
For Indian families across America,
schools have become battle grounds
- complete with Generals who fight heartlessly to shove
Indian children into a mold they will never fit into.
The end result is that these Indian children will be quietly
ushered from the school - either
expelled under trumped up charges
or "encouraged" to attend another school.
Last year, several Indian children stood up with
me and we sent affidavits to the Office of Civil Rights.
Today, several of those
children "who dared" have been expelled. I believe they were expelled
as punishment for standing up for themselves. And
I believe that if it were possible - I too would be expelled from
the human race for standing with them.
The reward to any child
who dares to try and change the school system to meet the needs
of people of culture and tradition is denial of an education. Am I making any headway
in my task of changing the school system to accommodate the dominant
culture of the student body?
The answer is "yes".
It's like trying to pull teeth from a growing, snarling
tiger. Not easy - nor impossible. Will there be casualties? "Yes" There will be more casualties
before the change is made - but it will be made.

Point
of Action: This issue presented many thought provoking
articles.
If you have questions and comments
please feel free to email me, nani@universityoflife.info.Think
about ways you might add a positive ray of light into
the life of a neighbor, hungry person or friends you
may know. Find a service man or woman and say
thanks. Play with your children and let loose
the furry pet you have in your back yard.Know of a
lonely elder in your community?Reach out and visit
or take them out for lunch.See a homeless person? Stop
and give them one of the $5 food certificates you can
get at any Burger King, Wendy's, McDonalds or other
fast food place.Take a moment to thank creator for
the freedom of speech, opportunity and rights you have.
Know this:In all the world there
is no one just like you, you are unique and special
right where you stand. There are seeds of greatness
in each of you, all you gotta do is feed it, water
it and believe.Come, take my hand and I will help you
to believe and see. Why?You are worthy!
Reflective moment: When someone
critiques you harshly or you have a moment of "I' am
not worthy or I don't belong", ask yourself this question;
is what I just heard about me or my heritage true? The
answer is most often a resounding "no", then THROW THE
RUBBISH COMMENT AWAY. DO NOT MAKE NONSENSE
IMPORTANT BY GIVING IT TIME.That is my kupuna's wisdom
and awesome advice that I practice daily and share with
you.
