With this proven approach learn to deep listen, see beyond the obvious to the power of simple, and trust your feelings. This book is dedicated to proving who you are not what you do matters. If you want to make a difference, we will guide you with the wisdom of our na Kupuna: Ka Hanohano (dignity), Ke kupono (integrity), Ka ha'aha'a (humility), Ke alaka'i (leadership), Ko ho omana (spirituality), Ke aloha (alo-sharing, oha-joyous, ha-breath of life), and the 4th R-responsibility. Komo Mai, come inside!
Excerpt: Children-Handle with Care:
Children are our legacy, and in our opinion, this book would not be complete without a generous section dedicated to them. Leadership is part of everyday life for us. We lead from the day we can comprehend; it is part of the harmonious balance of an ohana (family). The only thing that separates is the level of one's balanced leadership role.
For the purposes of this book, we will limit this section to the role of teachers as leaders. Teachers have immense power. Recall the story of my teacher at ten years old where his pronouncement was "Aki, you are nothing but a dirty Hawaiian, you will always be a dirty Hawaiian." Visualize that 10-year-old girl's life today had she believed this professional. Place yourself in that scene, then look around you or think of the one student in your charge that bugs you, or that you do not like. Then revisit some of the words you may have uttered to that child that made them feel frightened, worthless, like dirt, like crumbs you brush to the floor. Terrible vision isn't it? Trial by Fire: A True Story of Hope
Book Description: A story of tragedy and triumph. In 1983, Nani Linder suffered an extreme allergic reaction to medication for exposure to TB, which permanently damaged her nervous and autoimmune systems. "Trial by Fire" is a riveting account of her struggle. Accompany Nani on her journey and experience the power of the human spirit. Always to the point, she teaches us that everyone should watch the sunrise, listen to the whisper of the wind, and say a fond mahalo (thank you) to God for these gifts. Why? Because life is a celebration, God does not make junk and life is not a dress rehearsal. Know what? Tomorrow is today.
Excerpt:
November 10, 1992. Had a serious reaction to a sliver of
Demerol-Nov. 6, I think. Was to have a root canal at 9:30
a.m. but Ron insisted that I sit at Dr. Reynolds' office
to take this trial Demerol in case there is a problem. That
was at 8:30 a.m., and it is my belief that we came home
at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. with Dr. Reynolds' help. I'm writing
what I can recall; this time I'm crawling back, still going
to St. Patrick's Hospital Emergency Room every day for IV,
can't eat, can't drink, still vomiting, still very, very
sick. Dear God, is this ever going to end? I made a poem,
sort of, it's called: Ode to Demerol
